Name: Joslyn Findlay, or ‘Josie’
Age: One hundred and eight
Date of Birth: September Third
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Face Claim: Original Art
Appearance:
Height: 5’ 1”
Distinguishing Features: Josie usually opts to keep her horns hidden since they’re quite obnoxious, to say the least. They’re quite wide and curve slightly out to the side, reminiscent of what a dragon’s would look like. She does like that fact though. Dragons are cool.
As for her tail, in contrast to her ridiculously large horns it’s long and quite slender. It’s covered in scales down until almost the end, where a small tuft of fur runs along the top of it.
Character Class: Demon
Residency: Lives in the residential district, but works out of the Devil’s Strip.
Likes:
►More than almost anything, Joslyn has quite a fondness for soothing hot drinks. In particular, tea. The majority of her life has been spent discovering different mixtures and brews made for nearly any situation, and drinking it often herself.
►Of course, you can’t drink tea without a treat to go with it. While she never put quite as much energy in baking as she has brewing tea, she still has a decent knack at making pastries and cakes. It comes in handy at her cafe, but also at home. If her sister didn’t stop in once in a while to check on her, chances are all Josie would eat is baked goods. Oddly enough, this sweet tooth doesn’t carry over to actual candy. That she could take or leave.
►As she sits with her pot of tea and pastry in hand, she has a tendency to waste hours at a time reading books upon books. Her genre of choice is by far anything even remotely to do with fantasy. Heroines going to fight giant dragons; strange wingless, weak creatures that meet by chance and have to overcome obstacles to be together (those always were the most interesting─how some authors think of these things is beyond her!); demons and angels getting trapped in a bizarre world and having to figure out to get back home… anything that made her imagination run wild made her a happy camper.
►Ever since she was a child she always had a fondness for animals. They always talked far less while she was reading, and never tried to interrupt her thoughts with silly questions or arguments. She appreciated that.
Dislikes:
►Considering how Joslyn always tries to think on the bright side of things, it can really get under her skin if the people around her are the opposite. No one needs a negative Nancy around them all of the time, and Josie tries her damndest to make sure they stay far away from her. In fact, her shop actually has one of those joke signs that says ‘if you’re rude, we charge extra!’
Except it isn’t a joke.
She really will charge you more.
►As one would expect from one who loves all things sweet and fluffy, Josie really can’t stand anything bitter or sour. Even green grapes and apples are hardly palatable to her, and she will gladly turn them away for almost any other option.
►Anyone who walks into her Cafe could easily tell Joslyn is one who likes everything to be in their proper place. Tea organized in tins, pastries coordinated in their display case, chairs and cushions placed in the most aesthetically pleasing format. What she can’t stand is anyone disrupting her organization. Even if she goes somewhere else with everything out of place, before she can stop herself she tends to start organizing it into whatever she sees as the best method of doing so is.
►Because of her ‘ability’, Joslyn really can’t handle sudden temperature changes if she’s not expecting it. As long as she knows it’s coming she can adjust her focus as necessary to not really take notice of a drastic change of hot to cold. If she doesn’t, it can shock her senses and leave her almost stunned for a moment until she can adjust.
Personality:
If one were to walk into Joslyn’s Cafe without knowing anything about her, chances are their first impression would be that she’s quite chipper and friendly. Which is true, of course, but is also part of just being what any good business owner displays. After all, no one would want to get coffee or tea from a cafe where the owner was quiet and moody.
Not that she’s quiet and moody outside of the cafe by any means. Catching her while she’s reading may give off the false impression of a mousy nature, but no one really looks overexcited while they’re reading. Catch her any other time, and you’ll find yourself wishing she was reading so you can get her to stop talking your ear off. To say she’s bubbly and easily excitable is a severe understatement, and kind of hypocritical considering the fact she hates it when people chew her ear off when she’s trying to read. At some times it’s hard to figure out where she gets all of the energy in her tiny frame, but there’s certainly no denying it.
For how easy it is to get her talking about things, it’s also easy to get her to stop. It’s not a very nice thing to do to her, however. If one mentions how much she’s rambling or worse yet, that it annoys them, she’ll shut down almost completely. Growing up with all of her siblings speaking their mind to one another and knowing exactly what they mean, it’s still mildly frustrating to her not being able to figure out exactly what someone means by saying a particular thing.
She’s a people pleaser almost to a fault, gladly letting the people around her take the lead even if it means she gets left behind in the dust. It’s caused plenty of problems for her in the past, especially with her siblings. Slowly but surely she’s overcoming it, however, especially when it comes to her cafe. Since it’s become an actual successful business, it was obvious the people close to her would come from the woodworks trying to get handouts. This was the first flag that she needed to change to, if nothing else, protect her precious store.
The fact that she likes things in it’s place has gotten her into trouble on multiple accounts. She’s more than a little anal retentive with making sure things are in order, even if they’re not her things to organize. Want your room cleaned? Invite Joslyn over. Want to ever find your belongings in a place that make any sense? Don’t. For the most part there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the way she organizes or cleans things, but goodness forbid you change her unknown organization and face her tiny wrath.
History:
While it’s the norm to have different abilities or powers, Josie’s is a little unconventional. Sure, it may be more beneficial to breath fire or have superdemon strength like some of the heros in her books, all she’s capable of is telling exactly what temperature something is. Whether that’s actually any sort of ‘superpower’ is debatable. After all, most mothers have a knack for telling if their children are running a fever just by touching their forehead, can’t they? In Joslyn’s case, it’s always been a step higher than that. Her crowning moment was being able to tell a roast she had been cooking would have crossed that threshold of ‘perfectly cooked’ to ‘dried and gross’ had she not pulled it out when she noticed the temperature going too high.
As such, her talents prove pointless to most people. If anyone else discovered the only thing they were really good at was telling how hot or cold something was, chances are they would ignore it completely or curse their luck at such a ridiculous ability. Instead, she turned it into something she could work with. Growing up as the last of many─that is, fifteen─siblings, she found happiness in the calm of hiding away with nothing more than a cup of tea and a good book. As time went on she started to learn more and more about tea; how to brew it, what it can be used for, how to blend different ingredients… it didn’t take the young demon long to learn it was more than just throwing some leaves in a pot of water and calling it a day. If you put the right tea in the right temperature of water, well, that just made all of the difference.
Her siblings still argued that what she called a ‘power’ was the dumbest thing they had ever heard of, but supported her completely when she announced she was opening up a tea shop. Before long her business venture was underway, and ‘The Iron Kettle’ quickly became her main focus. It was small enough for her to run alone, although as with any customer service oriented job could become a little overwhelming. Despite that she wouldn’t trade it for the world.
While her parents have a tendency to all but forget about their children after they come of age, her brothers and sisters are all very close knit. Even with her occasional antisocial behaviors growing up and yes, still today, she tries to keep up spending time with them whenever she can. They have a habit of harassing her at work often enough, her sister Victoria in particular. Joslyn’s closer with her than with any of her other siblings, though her older sister has a habit of getting on her nerves more often than not.
Josie’s only “business partner” is her orange tabby cat named Noz, who travels with her to and from home and the cafe. The cat is quite plainly a momma’s boy, and follows his demon everywhere. If she’s in a closed room for too long he causes a world of fuss until she lets him in or comes back out. How could she not bring him with her to the cafe, too? Of course having a shop cat can be handy for business, since many regulars are just as smitten with the cat as he is with the attention they give him.
